The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned that it is embarking on a nationwide exercise to disconnect all indebted customers.

According to the company, the exercise is part of efforts to solidify its finances, which is significantly declining.

Speaking in an interview on Top Story on Tuesday, the leader of the ECG Disconnection Taskforce, Stephens Larbi Siaw, indicated that his outfit will not spare any customer, who's currently indebted to the ECG.

Confirming the disconnection of electricity supply to the Accra Sports Stadium, parts of the Kotoka International Airport and the La Palm Beach Hotel on Tuesday, Mr Larbi Siaw said the ECG is on the move to recoup monies owed the company.

"So, as you already know, we've been tasked. We've been around to make sure that the indebtedness of the ECG is brought down. So as we've been tasked to go ahead, we're doing just that.

"By either taking the debt that they're indebted to us, or we make sure that we disengage the supply, for them to follow up to the office to talk to our leaders", he stated.

Speaking on the indebtedness of the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr Larbi-Siaw disclosed that the Stadium is indebted to the ECG, to the tune of ¢508,087.37. This, he said, is debt that has accrued over three months.

In the La Palm Beach Hotel instance, he revealed that the Hotel owes the ECG ¢192,073.62 as of January 2022.

On Monday, Mr Larbi Siaw also confirmed that his task force disconnected parts of the Kotoka International Airport and the Ghana Airports Company over their indebtedness to the tune of ¢48,985,505.5.

Meanwhile, the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) is calling for the immediate removal of the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Kwame Agyemang Budu.

According to the workers, Mr Agyemang Budu has exhibited much incompetence hence does not deserve to continue being in office.

Holding placards, the workers used several inscriptions to express their frustration at the leadership style of their MD.

“ECG is bleeding”, “Don’t impose this incompetent MD on ECG”, “lack of electricity poles and cables”, and “acute shortage of meters”, among others, were the inscriptions on the placards.

On Tuesday, the Union made this appeal at a press conference at the Trades Union Building in Accra.
