A Labour Consultant, Austin Gamey has criticised the decision by the Workers of Public Universities in Ghana to detach themselves from the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Friday, Mr Gamey said reconciliation would have been the best choice for the two unions.
"It is most unfortunate to hear that this evening. I was expecting that the one speaking now will be inviting, by way of trying to mend fences. Regardless of the pressure that might be on now, if he could organise and get the people invited to a meeting for a kind of reconciliation," he stated.
The Workers at Public Universities in Ghana announced their detachment from the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The association, now formally known as the Tertiary Education Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), says it has run out of patience with the lackadaisical and irresponsible attitude of the national leadership of TEWU-TUC.
TEWU-GH alleged that its conditions of service have for the past 14 years not been renewed after several negotiations.
Reacting to this development, Mr. Gamey described the news of the detachment as unfortunate.
“I feel very sad. I say so because of course in unity lies strength as far as unions and its organisations are concerned, so anytime there is a split, wherever in the union, it is quite a warring matter,” he said.
