The Graduate Students Association of Ghana, University of Ghana chapter (GRASAG-LEGON) has commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo for her continuous effort to bridge the accommodation deficit among graduate students of the University of Ghana.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amfo on July 5 cut sod for the construction of a 60-apartment capacity building for Doctoral (PhD) students of the University of Ghana.

The GRASAG-LEGON President, Christiana Adu underscored that the intervention is timely and a step in the right direction as the University of Ghana aspires to become a world-class research-intensive university.
According to the GRASAG-UG President, “the peculiar nature of PhD studies requires that students have sound accommodation with unique ambiance and serenity to pursue their research endeavors. As such, GRASAG-UG is utterly grateful to the VC for identifying and fulfilling this great need”.
She added that the initiative is apt and will largely improve the quality of doctoral education at the University of Ghana.

While cutting the sod for the construction, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised that the project, upon completion, will make University of Ghana a hub for PhD training in the country and across the continent of Africa.
“This is the first phase. It is my expectation that in subsequent phases, we will make provision for childcare and other gender-based amenities which will fit the needs of the 21st century PhD student”, Prof. Amfo said.
The PhD apartments to be constructed will comprise 240 units. The first phase will be made up of three floors, housing 60 ensuite bedrooms (20 rooms on each floor), an office for the manager, a Porters’ Lodge and a reading room.

Other senior officials present at the sod-cutting ceremony were; Prof. Olivia A. T. F. Kwapong, Dean, School of Continuing and Distance Education; Prof. Clement Appah, Head, Department of Linguistics; Mr. Daniel O. Baidoo, Director, Human Resource and Organisational Development Directorate and Mrs. Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs Directorate.
