The University of Ghana Sports Director, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, has urged the government to speed up work on the hosting facilities for the 2023 Africa Games to be hosted in Accra.
Ghana is racing against time to get hosting facilities ready for the 13th Africa Games, which is less than a year away.
The university is expected to house the games’ village; with a dining area, medical hub, rugby field, and the University of Ghana Stadium, which has running tracks, located in the institution.
There are fears that work on these facilities cannot be completed on time for the opening ceremony of the games in August 2023.
Dr Bitugu believes the Ghana government can speed up work to meet deadlines and ensure Ghana is ready to host the 53 participating nations next August in Accra.
“We would be wishing, hoping, and desirous of hard work and speeding up things to be able to meet the deadlines,” he told Joy Sports in an interview.
“But clearly, we should be able to step up a little bit faster and more, so we get things sorted out and be ready for the games.
“We could benefit from a faster pace. Working faster and accomplishing a lot in a shorter period are always things that we desire when we are undertaking projects.
“We could certainly benefit far more and be even more hopeful and excited if we were moving a little bit faster.
“But all said and done, we are hopeful that we are going to host the games and we will be happy to be the eye of the world and Africa, especially.”
Meanwhile, the Borteyman Sports Complex, which will host 21 of the 23 approved sporting disciplines, is still at the foundation stage of construction.
