The Deputy Minority Whip has alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is the force behind Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo's bid to retain his seat as the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the NPP is campaigning for Mr Ofosu Ampofo to retain his seat to do the bidding of the NPP.
This, he explained, is because of their fear of what the party led by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, will do in 2024.
“As I speak to you if the NPP together with Ofosu-Ampofo are fighting Asiedu Nketia, then it tells you that Asiedu Nketia is fighting Ofosu-Ampofo and NPP at the same time. It tells you that he has something under his sleeves and clearly it presupposes that Ofosu-Ampofo is going to do the bidding for NPP and that is why the NPP are campaigning for him. Why is it so? They want a weaker leader so that they can break their eight,” he claimed.
However, he asserted that the NDC delegates are astute and won't simply watch and vote for him.
“As I speak to you the delegates have decided. They are all coming so quiet, the grassroot is so poised for 2024 and the man to do that is Johnson Asiedu Nketia so forget about the so-called this man.”
Being a national delegates election, there's a massive scramble for the 137 NDC MPs who are major stakeholders in Saturday's election.
Ahmed Ibrahim is claiming that the Minority Caucus in Parliament is overwhelmingly behind Johnson Asiedu and that only nine MPs are supporting the incumbent chairman.
”Out of the 137, Ofosu-Ampofo has only nine. They’re nine and we have their names. They have created a platform and they’re only nine. If out of 137 you have created a platform and you have only nine MPs on it. It presupposes that you don’t have the numbers here. As of this morning, they collapsed it. Asiedu Nketia has already won. Out of 137 you have only nine members. 137 minus nine, look at the numbers that are rooting for Asiedu Nketia,” he stated.
He further explained that an Ofosu-Ampofo-led NDC will be disastrous to the party's chances to win power in 2024.
Mr Ibrahim Ahmed further argued that the grassroots and the NDC MPs “need power” and that anyone who needs power is in support of Asiedu Nketia.
According to him, Johnson Asiedu Nketia has helped the NDC party in winning many seats in various regions compared to the incumbent National Chairman of the party.
Meanwhile, reacting to the claims on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Friday, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo dared the Deputy Minority Whip to provide evidence to support his claims.
According to him, the NPP is rather afraid of him because they know what he is made up of, adding that the NPP party knew he would rally votes for the NDC.
“I dare Ahmed Ibrahim that if he has any shred of evidence … if there is anybody the NPP is afraid of it is Ofosu-Ampofo because they know what I am made of,” he stated.
