The Chief Executive Officer of Okobeng Mining Company, Nana Okobeng Amponsah, has refuted claims that he fired gunshots at two small scale miners at an illegal gold mining site at Gwira-Ampasie in the Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira area in the Western Region.
According to him, indeed he had fired shots at the mining site, but they were merely warning shots and were not aimed at anyone or intended to cause harm.
He explained that the shots were fired following an attack by illegal miners on him when he and a colleague visited the site to investigate the pollution of the Ankobra by the illegal miners.
He said charges leveled against him following the incident and allegations that he had harmed the two miners are all false and unfounded.
He thus urged the general public to treat such reportage with the utmost contempt.
He noted that the recent attacks on his reputation via the media and through the judicial system are merely retaliations from illegal miners who have been affected by his anti-galamsey campaign in the area.
Currently, the matter is before a Half Assini High Court, but Mr. Okobeng says he is yet to meet with his accusers.
"As I am talking, where are my accusers? Last week, we had to go to court. I got there and was informed that the presiding judge is on leave. I was prepared.
“I called the police investigator via telephone and asked him about the case, and he responded that his Regional Commander has recalled the docket to Sekondi. Again, the commander has not given the court docket to them.
“And that they don't even know whether we are going to the court or not. From then l didn't hear about the case again," Nana Okobeng Amponsah explained.
Against this backdrop, he has called on the general public to disregard the media reports that he shot and killed miners at Gwira-Ampasie since it is only a calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation.
