Head Pastor of Assemblies of God’s Christian Center, Kumasi, Reverend Osei Karikari, says a lot of Ghanaians have confused the end-of-year celebrations with Christmas.
According to him, the two are separate occasions and must be treated as such.
He explained that whiles the end-of-year celebrations mainly constitute the fun and festivities that December in Ghana has become synonymous with, the Christmas celebration itself is a sacred one that honors the birth of Christ.
"...But when you're celebrating Chrismas that is the birth of Christ, there should be dos and don'ts, there should be some kind of limits that you put on yourself", he added.
In an interview on Joy Prime's morning show, Rev. Osei indicated that Christmas was more "churchy" in previous times.
"I remember some years back it was all about you waking up and putting on your new dress that has been bought by your parents, then you go to church, come back, cook and eat then in the evening you go to church, it was all about church", Rev. Karikari indicated.
He explained that the recent reveling that has come to characterize the season is borrowed from foreign cultures.
He also believes that social media has played a crucial role in the improper celebration of Christmas because it has made Christians more liberal towards certain Christian rules.
The Head Pastor again mentioned that the church and pastors have a lot of work to do because some church members do not know what Christmas is all about.
"A lot of young ladies and young men believe that if they don't go to the club to drink with their lovers and sleep at hotels then they've not celebrated Christmas but it's not like that", he said.
According to him, since Christmas is all about Christ, Christians should reflect Christ to honor his birth.
