A political scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has explained the massive declaration of support for former President John Mahama in his presidential bid.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, Dr Asah-Asante said that Mr Mahama is popular among the party’s rank and file.

“If you look at the NDC from where I sit, Mahama is very popular to the rank and file, to everybody within the party. So I am not surprised that you are seeing such gestures,” he said.

His comments follow Mr Mahama's backing by all Regional Chairmen of the NDC and his former contender, Joshua Alabi who believe he stands tall among all the candidates and must be given the nod to lead the party into the 2024 general elections.

Also, the Dean of Regional Chairmen of the NDC, John Kwadwo Gyapong, said John Mahama has their full support and they are ready to make sure he wins the presidential election.

According to Dr Asah-Asante, Mr Mahama is experienced and has a record, adding that election cannot be won without a set legacy.

“Those who want to contest, what legacy are they going to show? Obviously, they have to campaign using the legacy of Rawlings, Professor Mills and then John Mahama himself and if Mahama is a contestant, then you have a daunting task,” he added.

When asked if the massive declaration of support for Mr Mahama shows fairness, he replied “I don’t see a problem because if there is no rule that was broken, then where is the problem?

“The only problem will be that somebody will think somebody has a huge following and therefore cannot compete. Then that is a different story, we expect that person to back off and give way to those who have the courage to contest.”

According to him, the process is a democratic one and everybody is encouraged to contest.

Meanwhile, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says former President, John Mahama has no solutions to the economic challenges facing the country.

Mr. Richard Ahiagbah explained that his assertion is because, during Mr Mahama’s tenure in office, he couldn’t manage the economy.

“What we are interested in is whether or not he has a solution, because we saw his [Mahama] vanquished gains that he got, collapsed the economy, banking sector, cause Ghanaians to live in absolute difficulty in this country without electricity,” he said while addressing the press on Wednesday at the NPP headquarters.
