Musician King Promise says he was advised to boycott the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) after failing to win awards at the event despite his numerous nominations.
In an interview on TV3, he stated that despite the advice for him to withdraw from the scheme he chose not to do so for his fans and all music lovers that enjoy his music.
“Even with the VGMAs there were times where I had advice from people who were like ‘cancel it, don’t go again’. People say a lot of stuff, it’s up to you to make what you think of it.”
King Promise stated that he knew it was not the fault of his fans he was not winning awards because “when I drop the music it goes crazy, so, I know the fans do support me."
He said that “I always went still and performed, even when I didn’t win, I go the next year to perform, It’s about the fans for me.”
King Promise noted that he would not stop making entertaining his fans just because he lost out on a few awards.
He added that as a result of his resilience and love for fans, he won two awards at the 2023 ended VGMAs.
“Awards or not I was born to do this. I make this music from a special place and it’s not because of awards, yeah so for that fact when we get an award, we drop bangers, when we don’t get we still drop bangers, we just keep going,” King Promise noted.
King Promise first won the VGMA Songwriter of the Year award for his hit song CCTV in 2019. However, the awards seemed to miss him every year after that.
However, on Saturday, May 6, at the 24th edition of the annual music event, King Promise won the Afrobeats/Afropop Song of the Year and beat Black Sheriff to the Album of the Year.
