Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Joseph Ade Coker, has called for an end to the criminal prosecution of James Gyakye Quayson following his victory in the just-ended Assin North by-election.

James Gyakey Quayson is facing charges of perjury and forgery bothering on whether he had renounced his Canadian citizenship at the time he filed his nomination forms to contest the 2020 polls.

This followed a Supreme Court ruling that the Electoral Commission acted unconstitutionally in allowing Mr Quayson to contest the 2020 parliamentary election without proof of him renouncing his Canadian Citizenship.

The apex court in its ruling ordered parliament to expunge James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records as a Member of Parliament. It further declared that his election was unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect. His swearing-in was equally declared to be unconstitutional.

According to Ade Coker, the MP-elect’s victory is a resounding vote of approval from the people of Assin North and has urged government not to stoke unnecessary tension by continuing to pursue the case in court.

He called on ‘elders of this country’ to advise the government to withdraw the case for peace to reign.

“The people of Assin North have spoken that they prefer Gyakye Quayson to continue being an MP for them. I think we’ve got to a certain stage that the elders of this country should get up and advise the government that this matter should be withdrawn from court for us to move on.

“The case must be withdrawn from the court and we must move on. The verdict of the people is very clear; we want this country to be on a peaceful note rather than in turmoil. We have passed that stage, the matter is finished, the election has been held, the man has won overwhelmingly. There’s no need for us to continue any court issue,” he said.

James Gyakye Quayson beat the NPP’s Charles Opoku to win the Assin North parliamentary seat.

Mr. Gyakye Quayson got 57.56% of all votes cast while Charles Opoku got 42.155 of votes cast. The Labour Party of Ghana’s Bernice Sefenu got 0.29% of votes cast.
