More than a hundred wooden structures were burnt down on Sunday after a fire broke out at the CMB area in Accra.
These structures were shops where commodities for both commercial and domestic use were sold.
In a post on Facebook, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) revealed that they received the call about the fire around 05:04 a.m on Sunday.
Two minutes later the service had deployed the first fire engine to the scene but they were only able to bring it under control after an hour and thirty minutes.
At about 7:40 am, the service was able to douse all the flame leaving behind burnt down shops and destroyed goods.
Meanwhile, their efforts saw that the fire did not spread to the adjoining wooden structures and other buildings including the quality control office of COCOBOD.
"It took 4 pumps from Accra City, Circle, Ministries Fire Stations and Headquarters Substation to subdue this dawn’s blaze which razed down 350 wooden structures used for both commercial and domestic purposes and their contents including ovens, LPG cylinders, deep freezers, bags of flour and beans," the posts explained.
"Plaudits to the adept Firefighters for a great work done in salvaging adjoining wooden structures, storey buildings, and the quality control office of COCOBOD from the fire ruins. Special thanks to Alpha 1, FG 23, Alpha 3, Atlantic 1 and the other Officers at the scene for providing operational support."
The GNFS has indicated that there is an investigation ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
