Save Your Liver Foundation, a leading Liver health advocacy organization in sub-Saharan Africa has launched a new national sensitization programme dubbed: "Heal The Gut-Save The Liver Campaign" at the International Press Centre in Accra.
As a member of the World Hepatitis Alliance, Save Your Liver Foundation was encouraged to start its first advocacy on Hepatitis and liver health in 2009, which led to the establishment of numerous NGOs in the health sector collectively to promote liver health.
The NGO later entered into partnership with the Ghana Health Service to establish the Ghana Liver-Hepatitis Fund to implement the Ghana Response initiative on Hepatitis.
This was disclosed by the president of Save Your Liver Foundation, Mr Nyaaba-Aweeba Azongo during the launch.
Mr Nyaaba-Aweeba Azongo said to effectively run the campaign to achieve its objective, his organization will collaborate with some selected clinics across the country that go out for outreach programmes to engage in health screening.
According to him, the organization educates and gives these clinics the necessary orientation to enable them enrich their educational outreach programmes.
Giving more insight on gut health , Mr. Aweeba Azongo said the liver being the largest organ in the body performs over 500 vital functions daily to keep people alive, adding that it removes harmful toxins from nearly 100 gallons of blood per day as part of its functions.
He added that when the Gut-liver Axis becomes impaired, it affects its ability to filter blood, and immediately begins to allow toxins in the blood stream - a condition called LEAKY GUT that may lead to the onset of diabetes, autoimmune diseases, stroke, heart diseases, chronic kidney diseases, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, prostate diseases and digestive disorders.
He therefore called on all NGOs in the health sector to join hands with them to intensify gut education.
