The Minority in Parliament is claiming government intends to burden Ghanaians with more taxes in the 2024 Budget, set to be presented on Wednesday, November 15.
According to a member of Parliament's Finance Committee, John Jinapor, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta intends to raise 11 billion cedis in revenue as part of the budget.
But John Jinapor says his side will not allow this to go through.
He noted that it is unacceptable to come up with new taxes to increase the burden of the ordinary Ghanaian.
“We just heard the Minister of Finance at the Finance Committee and the Minister indicates that he intends to raise an additional 11 billion which is about 1% of GDP, but we have told him that we think that the people of Ghana have been taxed so much, the tax burden is already high so it will be inappropriate to come with new taxes,” he said.
The Minority Spokesperson on Mines and Energy suggested the Finance Minister looks at how to cut down expenditure.
Also, former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has asked Mr Ofori-Atta to review existing taxes to give the private sector some breathing space.
Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has announced that the budget will highlight, among others, the performance of the economy, efforts to boost the productive capacity of the economy through the new Growth Strategy, fiscal measures, and debt management strategies to deepen stability and promote growth.
