Chairperson of the African Women Leaders Network, Ghana National Chapter, Dr. Charity Binka, has called for more education and sensitisation on issues related to gender-based violence.
According to her, the prevalence of gender-based violence in Ghana is a blight on the country’s efforts to achieve gender parity.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Law, she told host, Samson Lardy Anyenini, that it was about time the fight against gender-based violence was taken to the doorsteps of the people.
She argued that while the government has enacted laws to protect women, there is little to show for its impact in the protection of women particularly in domestic settings.
“That’s education that we need. Because when I was listening to Kezia, she was talking about the law, what was going through my mind is how many people can even afford to go see a lawyer? They don’t even know where to go. In fact, in our country today, we have several laws, acts and everything that seek to protect women.
“In fact, I was counting a number of them, even starting with the constitution, right down to the domestic violence act and all other intestate succession laws all these things they’re there to protect us but some people do not even know these laws exist.
“That is why I think that there should be more education in the churches, in the mosques, in the districts, in market places. We need to do a lot more of work because as a country we should bow our heads in shame that we’re still talking about domestic violence, about women being killed.
“Every day you open our dailies and find that a boyfriend has poured acid on somebody, a husband has killed somebody and put under bricks and I’m asking myself how can we be doing this?” she said.
