The Assemblyman for Dormaa Electoral Area at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region, Ibrahim Yussif, has expressed concern that there will be a low voter turnout in the upcoming District Assembly elections.
Mr. Yussif mentioned that most people are unaware of the upcoming elections, citing the lack of publicity as a reason for the expected low turnout.
He, therefore, appeals to the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to create awareness and educate residents about the importance of elections.
“This year’s publicity about the district assemblies is very low and some do not know there are any upcoming elections. The publicity is low so I think the turnout or those who will turn out to vote will not be many. So I plead with the NCCE to help with the publicity. Also, they have to educate and inform others why it is necessary to vote," he explained.
Speaking to Adom News, some residents also predicted that the turnout will not be encouraging because they see the district assembly elections as non-partisan.
They also revealed that, when the elections are over, the elected people do not perform as expected and this does not motivate them to vote.
“In Ghana, we mostly vote along party lines. The assembly elections are partisan so the person will say because he or she does not belong to that party, he or she will not go and vote.”
“The turnout is reducing because when these elected officials comes to power, they do not perform their duties as expected which doesn’t help in the development of the community,” another said
