Cameroonian-American singer Libianca says she was surprised at the unexpected popularity her song 'People' garnered after its release.
During an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the musician shared that, while recording the song, her primary focus was on channelling and expressing some frustrations that were weighing on her through music.
She noted that she felt better later after alleviating her emotional burdens and finding solace in the studio
Libianca highlighted that, at the time of releasing the song, she did not anticipate its viral success.
“I never saw it coming….I am a strange girl and that's why I do music so I can let out my worries. So got in the studio and I just wanted to feel better because there was so much on my chest. I just needed to let some stuff out.”
“So I went to bed and felt better, recorded myself later, posted it and it went viral. I was just coming into the studio to feel better so that was it,” Libianca said.
The Cameroonian singer noted that she, however, believes that People’s growth could also be attributed to the audience’s relations to the song.
She explained that some people may have related well to the song, sharing similar experiences she was going through at the time.
'People' was released in December 2022 to popular acclaim.
With the song, Libianca made her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 91 on May 13. It peaked at number 80 on the chart.
'People' also peaked at number two on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs Chart. It was certified platinum in about eight countries including the US, UK, Belgium, France and Canada.
