Citi News’ Northern Regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, says he was assaulted by Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama during the New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s parliamentary primary.

The journalist who was at the Yendi Senior High School when the incident happened said he is traumatised as the incident has taken an emotional toll on him.

In a video sighted by Joy News, Farouk Mahama and his team were seen rushing in the direction of a crowded area after which there was confusion.

The chaos erupted during the vote counting process, with accusations against one of the Electoral Commission’s officials of tampering with the ballots of Farouk Aliu Mahama’s opponents, particularly Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, January 29, Mr Alabira expressed the psychological impact of the incident, admitting that he experienced sleepless nights despite not sustaining physical injuries.

"Physically, there is no physical injury, just that, for the past two days, I don’t know, maybe if I’m overthinking or something, I couldn’t sleep," Alabira said.

However, a statement from the Yendi MP denied any involvement in the incident concerning the Citi News reporter.

"We also categorically reject the claim that individuals associated with the Honourable MP engaged in that regrettable act," Mr Farouk's office said.

It added that the MP "has consistently advocated for a peaceful and constructive political environment. We do not endorse or engage in any form of violence. We want to make it clear that the honourable member does not endorse assault on anybody."

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has declared that no winner was officially recognised in the NPP Parliamentary Primaries in Yendi.

The absence of a clear winner is attributed to disruptions that occurred during the counting process.

Despite the absence of an official declaration, both candidates, Farouk Mahama and Abibata Shani, have individually proclaimed victory following the contest.

Addressing the issue on JoyNews, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoo, Director of Electoral Services for the EC, emphasized that an official winner has not been determined as of yet.
