Social media sensation Afua Asantewaa has apologised to Ghanaians for her inability to communicate the result of her sing-a-thon before the Guinness World Record (GWR) announced it.
According to her, she was well aware that many people had supported her during her sing-a-thon attempt and expected her to announce the results whether she got the recognition or not.
Some members of the public have criticised her for how they got to know about the result and accused her of being dishonesty for her personal gains.
Speaking on Accra-based U-TV on March 2, she explained that if her team had prior knowledge of the outcome, they would have called a press conference to announce the result.
“After this whole thing, we were anticipating that whatever the outcome and wherever the result will come, we would do a press conference because we started with a press conference."
"So the way it came up honestly I was like 'ooh wow'. So I quickly went into my Instagram box and I was hoping to see at least Efua check your mail so I said let me hold on and wait for the opening of the account to see what is there before I respond."
“So let me just use the opportunity, in my response in my various interviews on Monday, probably I might have stepped on a toe or something, let me just apologise and move on because there are so many things I would want to do to still promote Ghana and I don’t want the sing-a-thon to take us back,” she said.
Asantewaa endured a five-day singing marathon which began at midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2023, and ended at 7:00 am on December 29, 2023.
After months of submitting her evidence, Ghanaians had constantly asked the GWR about the outcome. Each time, however, the GWR said they were reviewing her results.
On February 23, the GWR while commenting on a post by another Ghanaian pertaining to the outcome of the record attempt, said, "We've seen how inspirational it has been for her fans…We wish Afua the best of luck with any future record attempts."
They added that the money Afua Asantewaa's team paid for a priority review has been refunded.”
This comment by the GWR implied that Afua was already aware of her results and suggested that she had chosen to keep it away from the public.
Subsequently, many Ghanaians, following the news publication, have expressed their disappointment on why she kept such news away.
But Afua clarified that she had lost access to the GWR account and, to date, she is unable to determine the rule she violated which led to her disqualification.
“I was rather worried about me not finding the actual fact as to what happened because nobody knows. Maybe someone wants to also undertake a sing-a-thon.
"There are people reaching out to me day-in-day-out. Maybe I can say I did this so don’t repeat it but I don’t have any of such information. I am being back-lashed for something I don’t even have access to,” she added.
