Ghana’s male tennis team, the Golden Rackets, have not often excelled at the African Games, with just two medals to show in the competition’s history.
However, captain of the team, Frederick Egyir, believes this year’s Accra 2023 competition would be different.
The men’s doubles, which will see Ghana’s number one and 2023 swag tennis player of the year, Abraham Asaba, team up with Isaac Nortey, is the country’s most promising avenue for a medal in tennis.
The pair have been consistent over the past years and reached the final of the ITF M15 competition in the Dominican Republic just three months ago.
Egyir is confident the pair can produce the goods on home soil.
“I’m optimistic and the focus is to get the gold medal. I have some top players who have been doing well in recent times.
“We qualified to Zone 3 of the Davis Cup just last year, with these same players.
We have a very good doubles team and I believe we’ll get gold.
“I really trust the doubles team,” he told Joy Sports in an exclusive interview.
The tennis tournament at the 2023 African Games will run from March 15-23.
