The Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Evans Bobie Opoku, said his outfit cannot provide a timeline on when Ghana’s 2023 African Games medalists will receive their bonuses.
Before the start of the games, the sports ministry promised athletes that winning a gold medal would attract a prize of three thousand dollars, two thousand for a silver medal and one thousand for winning a bronze medal.
The Local Organizing Committee and the sports ministry organized a press conference on Monday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to thank athletes and Ghanaians for successful games.
Speaking at the event, Bobie Opoku stated that he cannot provide a timeline for when the athletes will receive their bonuses.
“It’s a process. You know Ghana, if you work in the public sector you don’t just stand up and go and pick money,” he said.
“It goes through a process. I am not the approving authority. I cannot give you a time frame.
“My job is to get the list and put the figures together and forward same to the appropriate authority and secure approval.
“When I have the approval then I can be sure and tell you tomorrow or today, but I want to assure you and the general public that, bonuses of the athletes will be paid.”
Ghana ended the games with a medal haul of 69 – the highest in the competitions history. Before that, the highest Ghana has won is 27 in 1973.
