A non-profit organization, Gender and Reproductive Health Advocacy Youth Network (GRAY Network) has embarked on a project aimed at building the capacity of the youth in local governance.
The Project Manager for GRAY Network, Godsway Mensah, said the project seeks to enhance youth awareness of the operations of local governance and providing a platform for residents to voice their concerns and contribute to decision making in their respective jurisdictions.
"We believe that informed youth are key to a vibrant and responsive community. By engaging them in these discussions, we aim to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility," he said.
The project which includes organising workshops, community meetings, and direct engagement with local authorities saw participants equipped with the knowledge to interact with officials from the South Tongu District Assembly. They raised issues regarding the lack of infrastructure, challenges in the education sector, and poor public services in the district.
The Planning Officer at the South Tongu District Assembly, Mohammed Abu Shiraz assured the community members that their concerns would be addressed.

"We are committed to making sure that each community is consulted for a thorough needs assessment. This feedback will directly influence the district's mid-year budget," he said, emphasizing the importance of grassroots involvement in governance.
The participants expressed joy and satisfaction with the initiative, citing the tangible impact it has had on their lives.
"The engagement has made me know that as a youth, we need to be aware of the things that go on in our assemblies, and I am sure I would get myself involved from this day forward," said Badagbo Abraham, a participant.
Miss Venunye Setsiame Zodzenu also mentioned that the program has increased her understanding of the local governance system.
“Now I know how decisions are made and who to approach when there's a problem. It has made me more hopeful about the future of our community," she stated.
