The Asuogyaman District Registration Review Committee of the Electoral Commission (EC), has disqualified 23 people from the Volta region from partaking in the voter registration exercise.
According to the committee, these persons attempted to register in the Asuogyaman constituency in the Eastern Region although they are from the Volta Region.
The Review Committee said the disqualified individuals could not confirm their residency by identifying local landmarks or sharing relevant information about the community they claimed to live in.
Agents of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suspected these individuals were not residents and protested, leading to their disqualification from the voter registration.
According to the committee, the 23 applicants had their ID cards seized.
This sparked an outrage from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate and the CEO of the National Youth Authority, Pius Enam Hadzide.
Mr. Hadzide accused the committee chairman, Nana Asare Akowua III, the Krontihene of Akwamu Traditional Area, and other committee members including the Police, of partiality and bribery.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced an extension of the ongoing voters registration exercise.
The exercise, which has been extended by two days, will now end on May 29 instead of the initial May 27.
In a public notice, the EC said this extension is to make up for the time lost due to network challenges.
“The exercise will now end on Wednesday, the 29th of May, 2024. This arrangement has been put in place to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two (2) days of the registration exercise,” the notice read.
