Abomosu STEM Senior High School has secured the final qualification slot from the Eastern Region for the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) National Championship after defeating Ghana Senior High School, Koforidua, in a dramatic tie-breaker.
The contest produced one of the most thrilling finishes of the regional qualifiers, with Abomosu STEM SHS holding their nerve to prevail after both schools finished level on 43 points.
Abomosu STEM SHS controlled much of the contest, building a comfortable lead through the opening rounds.
By the end of the third round, the school had amassed 43 points, opening up a nine-point advantage over Ghana SHS, Koforidua, which had 34 points. Mamfe Methodist Girls' SHS remained in contention with 29 points.
Ghana SHS, Koforidua, however, mounted a spirited comeback in the final round, erasing the deficit to draw level with Abomosu STEM SHS on 43 points and forcing the contest into a tie-breaker.
With the final qualification ticket at stake, Abomosu STEM SHS answered the decisive question to seal victory and book their place at the national championship.
Mamfe Methodist Girls' SHS finished third with 32 points after an impressive performance.
The victory means Abomosu STEM SHS becomes the 13th and final school from the Eastern Region to qualify for the 2026 NSMQ National Championship.
For Ghana SHS, Koforidua, it was a painful end to an impressive comeback after trailing for most of the contest, while Mamfe Methodist Girls' SHS bowed out after a determined display.
