Asante Kotoko have completed the double over their bitterest rivals, Hearts of Oak, this season following Sunday’s 2-0 win at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in a match week 31 clash of the Ghana Premier League.
The first round game was also played in Kumasi, with Asante Kotoko winning 3-2.
Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala scored both goals, after also scoring a brace in the first round game.
Mukwala caught the Hearts of Oak backline cold and made no mistake when he brought down a brilliant overhead pass to finish off the ball inside nine minutes, with four Hearts of Oak defenders following him without putting in a challenge.
He then wrapped up a fabulous afternoon with an astonishing strike in stoppage time after picking up the ball just outside the halfway line, running into the Hearts of Oak box, cutting onto his right before unleashing an unstoppable shot.
The win means Asante Kotoko move up to ninth with 43 points while Hearts of Oak are 14th with 38 points, two points away from relegation.
Asante Kotoko will next take on Accra Great Olympics on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in match week 32.
Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak are set to host Nations FC at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, May 31, 2024.
