A former director of the Institute of Adult Education (now the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education), Miranda Greenstreet, has called for enhanced civic education among citizens.
She stated that many citizens are compelled to accept bribes in exchange for their votes due to prevailing economic challenges.
Speaking to Kojo Yankson on JoyNews' The Sages, she stated that civic education is crucial in empowering citizens to understand their rights and responsibilities in elections.
“People should understand their rights and responsibilities and what to do and not allow themselves to be influenced. I am told that these days the election is all about who gives you most money. If people are educated enough to know their civic rights and responsibilities, they will realise that elections is their duty to ensure that they elect the right people to represent them in parliament.”
According to the Professor, a well-informed electorate would prioritise selecting candidates who genuinely represent their interests and address their concerns in Parliament.
“You don’t have to be bribed just to go and elect anybody but when you are electing someone, you must think of who the best candidate or the best person to be able to show concern for your problems in parliament,” she said.
