A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Gomoa West in the Central Region, Alex Abban, has voiced his disagreement with President Akufo-Addo’s recent statement challenging Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s sole claim to the title of Ghana's founder.
In his 2024 Founders’ Day address on Saturday, August 3, President Akufo-Addo argued that the establishment of Ghana was a collective achievement and not solely the work of Dr Nkrumah.
This view has sparked diverse reactions across political and historical discussions.
Speaking to Channel One TV on Saturday, August 10, Mr Abban expressed his disagreement with the President's assertion that Dr Nkrumah should not be exclusively recognized as the founder.
Despite this, Mr Abban acknowledged that many individuals contributed to Ghana's fight for independence.
He emphasised that while Dr Nkrumah played a pivotal role, it is also important to recognize the collective efforts of others in the nation’s journey to independence.
“I am in a difficult position because I cannot agree with the president. I cannot agree with him but I agree with the statements that he made that a lot of people fought for independence."
“…So for us to think that anybody who founded the nation did not have a team of lieutenants we will be wrong but obviously when history is being written when names are being mentioned one person will stand the pride of place, will stand tall,” he insisted.
