The Ghana Photojournalists Network (GPNeT), a registered Press photography organisation, will celebrate World Photography Day with Student Photographers of the Tema Technical Institute (TTI) on 19th August 2024 in Tema.

GPNeT membership comprises over 100 photojournalists and Videographers working in the Ghanaian media.

The objectives of the network include the continuous professional development of members, the promotion of their welfare and the mentoring of young talents.

The celebration under the theme: "An Entire Day-Mentoring Young Photographers," is being organised for members of the network to share their knowledge and experience in Photojournalism with the photography students.

A statement issued and signed by the General Secretary of the GPNeT Mr Godfred Blay Gibbah stated that the event will be an excellent opportunity to give back to society as a considerable number of the network's members are old students of TTI.

The programme is aimed at helping the students appreciate the benefits of photojournalism to society and encourage them to become professional photojournalists.

President of GPNeT, Mr David Andoh, will make a presentation on "Photojournalism and its impact on society, while an Executive Member of GPNeT, Mr Dan Nii Doudu Amo, will discuss "Ethics and the safety of Photojournalists."

Participants will tour a fish processing site, a residential area inundated by sea erosion and the Chemu Lagoon to take pictures and interview stakeholders.

World Photography Day recognizes the contribution of a French artist, Louis Daguerre, who perfected the Daguerreotype (a photograph made on silver-covered copper sheets) on 19th August 1839.

The day is dedicated to the art, craft, science and history of photography. It is also used to create awareness about important issues that affect our world.

GPNeT in the 2020 edition collaborated with the Ministry of Information to mark the day with a photo exhibition on COVID-19.

In 2022, it collaborated with the Forestry Commission to plant trees in Accra while in 2023 it collaborated with the Ghana Tourism Authority to organise a photo walk at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra.
