The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has praised the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for his handling of Tuesday's parliamentary proceedings, describing his leadership during the session as "a masterclass."
In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on Tuesday, October 22, the NDC commended the Speaker’s "mature leadership" and what he sees as a commitment to conducting Parliament’s business in a way that serves the interests of both Parliament and the people of Ghana.
The party stated that Speaker Bagbin’s leadership has enhanced the integrity of Parliament and expressed confidence that he will continue to uphold the independence of the legislative process.
"We applaud him for working in the interest of Parliament and the people of Ghana and enhancing the integrity of Parliament with his leadership," the NDC stated.
The NDC's comment comes after the Speaker of Parliament on Tuesday, October 22 adjourned sitting in the House filled with NDC legislators who had occupied the Majority side of the aisle amid vacant seats controversy.
The NPP Members of Parliament had walked out earlier due to a controversy with the opposition, who had taken over their seats after claiming to constitute the majority.
Alban Bagbin told the House that they had enough numbers to conduct business but acknowledged that it was not enough to make decisions. However, he formally communicated his position after agreeing with Madina MP, Francis-Xavier Sosu that the record should be corrected to reflect that, on Thursday, when the NPP group walked out, they were the Minority.
In light of this, the party expressed its belief that the House will prioritise the needs of Ghanaians over partisan interests.
"We are confident that ultimately, the integrity and independence of Parliamentary processes will be upheld," the statement continued.
The statement also commended the NDC Caucus for their unwavering stance in the face of challenges.
“Their steadfastness inspires confidence and hope in our determination to resist oppressor’s rule and to give expression to the truth that power ultimately belongs to the people,” the party said.
The party reiterated its commitment to upholding democracy and fostering a brighter and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians.
