The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has raised concerns over the escalating political tensions in Ghana, pointing to the recent expulsion of four MPs by Speaker Alban Bagbin as a sign of deepening national discord.
Speaking at the 80th-anniversary celebration of St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church in Accra on Sunday, October 27, Mahama highlighted the urgent need for constitutional reform to address the nation’s evolving governance challenges.
He also commended Speaker Bagbin for his mature handling of the tense situation in Parliament, especially following the Supreme Court’s stay of Bagbin’s ruling, which led to an indefinite adjournment of Parliament on October 22.
Reflecting on the state of Ghana’s democracy, Mahama warned of a looming constitutional crisis, stating that recent events have exposed significant gaps in the nation’s political framework.
“We almost had a constitutional crisis in Parliament. But for the Speaker’s decision to suspend proceedings, a clash between the judiciary and our Parliament could have ensued. Our government is in crisis,” Mahama stated.
He called for a reassessment of the constitution to resolve these issues and strengthen the governance structure, advocating for a reform that addresses existing loopholes and reflects the country’s changing needs.
“Ghana needs to reset. We need to look at our constitution again, revise it, and close these gaps to prevent future conflicts. Our attitudes are in crisis, and our government needs reform,” Mahama added.
