Documenta Social Ventures, with support from The KGL Foundation, has launched a free, intensive training program in documentary filmmaking in the Asuogyaman District. Known as #MasterIt 2024, this initiative is in its second year, focusing on equipping young individuals with skills in the audio-visual sector of the creative industry.

The program provides an immersive, hands-on learning experience in video production, complemented by entrepreneurial skills training. It specifically targets young people in the district, aiming to empower them with new media skills for self-employment opportunities.

The year-long initiative, #MasterIt 2024 guided participants through the process of documentary filmmaking, culminating in a professionally produced documentary created in collaboration with the beneficiaries.

One success story is Tieko, a volunteer at the Senchi Learning Centre with a keen interest in IT. Currently awaiting university admission, Tieko joined the program and gained valuable skills in filming and video editing. Inspired by his training, he collaborated with a friend to create a lifestyle and culture TV show, which is set to air on a local TV network in the Asuogyaman District. Reflecting on his journey, Tieko shared, “I considered filmmaking as a part-time job, but after the feedback I received from our TV project, I am now considering it as a full-time profession.”

Another participant, Solomon, has a background in banking but struggled to find work in the field after completing his studies in banking and finance years ago. With a passion for photography and videography, Solomon initially tried to earn a living by photographing tourists visiting the scenic riverside hotels and recreational sites in the district. However, his efforts yielded limited success.

His perspective changed when he discovered the #MasterIt training course in his community. The program provided him with the skills and confidence to establish his own photo studio along Atimpoku’s main road. Reflecting on the impact of the program, Solomon described it as a transformative experience that opened doors to new opportunities.

The #MasterIt 2024 initiative continues to demonstrate the power of creative education in fostering self-reliance, skill development, and economic empowerment among youth in the Asuogyaman District.
