The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus has nominated Bernard Ahiafor, the Akatsi South MP, as the First Deputy Speaker for the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The announcement was made during an NDC Parliamentary Caucus meeting on Monday, January 6, 2025, as the party prepared for the official start of the new parliamentary term.
The Speaker of Parliament is supported by two Deputy Speakers—positions crucial for the smooth functioning of the House. Parliamentary rules stipulate that the two Deputy Speakers must represent different political parties to ensure balance and fairness in proceedings.
Notably, the Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, was re-elected as the Second Deputy Speaker.
Mr Asiamah, an independent MP, had also served in this role during the Eighth Parliament, earning respect across the political divide for his impartiality and experience.
With the Ninth Parliament set to begin its work, this leadership arrangement promises continuity and collaboration in the House, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to fostering democratic principles.
