Nigerian-Canadian R&B and Afro-soul singer Ose, has opened up about her music journey, inspirations, and creative process in an exclusive interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz.
Ose, who started her music career during the coronavirus pandemic period, has already released seven songs. When asked about her inspiration, Ose credited her late grandmother, who had a band in Nigeria, and her mother, who introduced her to music at a young age through church choir practices.
"My late grandmother is a big inspiration for me. She had a band back in Nigeria, it’s like an incarnation. My mom is also a big inspiration. I grew up going with her to church choir practices, and that's how I got introduced to music," she said.
Ose also shared the story of how she wrote her first song. "I picked up my pen and paper and went to the washroom to write," she recalled. "I was like, 'Okay, some of my best ideas come when I'm in the shower, so let me write in the washroom.' And just like that, I wrote my first song."
When it comes to collaboration, Ose is all for it.
"I'm very big on collaboration. I think that the biggest hits, some of our favorite songs, were not created by a single person. I think that even to grow as a creative and as an artist, you need people in a room that are better than you and that are going to challenge you," she noted.
As for handling competition, Ose intimates that it has always driven her to be better.
"I never view competition like a toxic way. If I see somebody that is better than me, in my head, I'm like, 'I want to learn from you.' I give myself a benchmark, and I'm like, 'By this time, I gotta either be where you're at or better than you," she said.
In the meantime, her latest track 24 hours is set to be released in March or April, 2025.
