Samuel Nartey George, the Minister nominee for Communications, Digitalisation and Innovation, has advocated for cybersecurity to remain a standalone entity within Ghana’s governance framework.
He emphasised the growing significance of cybersecurity in national security and economic development, arguing that it should not be merged with any other agency.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, Mr George stressed the need for dedicated resources and independent oversight to tackle the increasing cyber threats facing the country.
He stated that cybersecurity plays a crucial role in safeguarding digital infrastructure, personal data, and financial systems.
“Cybersecurity should remain a standalone entity,” he asserted. “It is a critical national security issue, and we must ensure that it receives the necessary attention, funding, and expertise to combat cyber threats effectively.”
He added that merging cybersecurity with other agencies could dilute its focus and weaken Ghana’s digital resilience.
Mr George assured that, under his leadership, the government would work closely with stakeholders to strengthen cybersecurity laws and infrastructure.
He reiterated the importance of fostering partnerships with international organisations and private sector actors to enhance the country’s digital security capabilities.
