The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed the Committee of Selection to immediately reconstitute the Appointments Committee.
Additionally, he instructed the Committee of Selection to establish a Standing Orders Committee to review and revise the rules governing the assessment of ministerial nominees for parliamentary approval.
This directive follows chaotic scenes that disrupted the vetting process for ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, January 31, Speaker Bagbin described the incident as not only a gross affront to the dignity of Parliament but also a blatant act of contempt against the House.
He noted that the incident had further eroded public trust in Parliament and its Members.
“I call for an immediate meeting of the Committee of Selection today, to reconstitute the Appointments Committee as a matter of urgency and to set up the Standing Orders Committee to reconsider a revision of the rules for the assessment of nominees for the consideration and approval by the House.”
The Speaker has also constituted a seven-member special committee to conduct a full-scale investigation into the chaos that transpired during the vetting on Thursday.
The committee members include Emmanuel Bedzrah – Chairman, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Gizella Akushika Tetteh- Agbotui (Mrs), Abena Osei Asare (Mrs), Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (Dr), Vincent Oppong Asamoah and Bede Anwataazuma Ziedeng.
Speaker Bagbin stated that the committee must identify all Members involved in the disorder and submit its report, including findings and recommendations, within 10 days, starting Friday, January 31.
“Any Member found culpable shall face the appropriate disciplinary measures as prescribed by the Constitution, 1992, the Parliament Act of 1965, and the Standing Orders of Parliament,” he said.
