Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has assured the public that anyone found responsible for the recent stadium violence in Nsoatre will face the full force of the law.
His remarks come in the wake of the tragic stabbing of an Asante Kotoko fan after a Ghana Premier League match, which led to his death during their clash with Nsoatreman FC on matchday 19.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Kofi Adams strongly condemned the violent act, emphasizing that no one is above the law and that security forces will thoroughly investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
In response to the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended all Premier League matches while the police conduct investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in connection with the violent disturbance.
The suspects, identified as former Employment Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph, are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
During a search of suspect Agyemang Duah Owusu’s residence, police discovered two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. The findings have raised further concerns about the escalation of violence at football matches.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has personally reached out to the family of the deceased and the leadership of Asante Kotoko to extend the Police Service’s condolences. He assured them of a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
With rising concerns over football hooliganism and security at sports venues, Kofi Adams reiterated the government’s commitment to tightening security at stadiums nationwide to prevent future violence and ensure fans and players are protected.
