Ghana has recorded a total of 6,145 cholera cases, with 719 confirmed and 49 deaths across five regions, according to the Minister of Health.
The outbreak, which began in October 2024 in Ada West, Greater Accra Region, has since spread to the Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern regions.
Briefing Parliament on the state of the cholera and meningitis outbreak on Tuesday, February 18, the Health Minister stated, "As of February 13, 2025, Ghana has recorded a total of 6,145 cases, with 719 confirmed and 49 deaths across all five affected regions."
The Minister, however, acknowledged the severity of the outbreak but noted an improvement in the situation.
"Mr. Speaker, it is worth noting that the situation is improving, with active cases now concentrated only in the Central Region."
The Central Region has been particularly affected, with districts such as Agona West and Effutu experiencing a surge in cases. He added "In the past week alone, these two districts reported 133 cases, 23 admissions, and unfortunately, two deaths. However, I bring encouraging news—new cholera cases are decreasing, and the districts of Agona West and Effutu, which were initially hard-hit, are now showing a decline in new cases," the Minister said.
As of February 16, 2025, only the Central Region had active cases, with 28 patients currently receiving treatment—18 in Effutu and six in Cape Coast and four in Agona West.
To curb the outbreak and prevent further spread, the Ministry of Health has implemented a multi-sectoral response strategy in collaboration with various stakeholders. "We have activated regional and district Public Health Emergency Committees in all affected regions to ensure a coordinated response," the Minister noted.
