Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has revealed that the cost of furnishing the central bank’s new headquarters was awarded at $11.1 million as part of several contracts associated with the building project.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, Dr Asiama detailed the financial breakdown of additional infrastructure contracts tied to the construction of the new headquarters.
“Mr Speaker, beyond the core building, separate contracts were awarded for other infrastructure. This includes ICC systems and network infrastructure at $8.6 million, integrated electronic security systems at $15.8 million, and furniture and furnishings at $11.1 million,” he stated.

He explained that these elements were necessary to ensure that the central bank operates in a secure and technologically advanced environment, in line with the demands of a modern financial institution.
“Mr Speaker, while the new headquarters project has understandably drawn public attention, it is important to emphasise that the Bank of Ghana remains fully focused on its primary responsibilities—maintaining price stability, ensuring financial sector resilience, and fostering economic growth,” Dr Asiama added.
The state-of-the-art facility, located in Accra, was inaugurated on November 20, 2024, by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The construction of the Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters sparked national debate, with concerns raised over the cost of the project amid Ghana’s current economic challenges. The then-Minority in Parliament demanded the resignation of former Governor Dr Ernest Addison and his deputies.
However, the central bank maintains that the project is a necessary investment to enhance its operational efficiency. Dr Asiama defended the decision, stating that the old BoG office had structural defects and was no longer fit for purpose.
