The Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has sounded the alarm over the continued activities of illegal miners despite ongoing efforts to combat the menace.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews' The Probe on Sunday, March 16, Dr. Ashigbey stated that while the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources is making efforts to address the crisis, illegal miners remain active, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies.
“Some work is happening, but unfortunately, the criminals are still at work. The criminal transition we saw in 2016 and 2017 has happened again. Now, not only are NDC criminals taking over from NPP criminals, but even some NPP criminals are partnering with them. They provide the equipment and manpower while hiding behind political figures,” he revealed.
Dr. Ashigbey highlighted the influence of politically exposed individuals in the galamsey operations, stressing that the political class, including elements from both major parties, is deeply involved. He also pointed to foreign involvement, particularly from Chinese nationals, in the illegal mining operations.
Beyond environmental devastation, he warned of a growing national security threat. He disclosed that illegal mining groups have recruited heavily armed individuals, including foreigners, to protect their activities.
“These people have sophisticated weapons and ammunition. Many of them are from neighbouring countries, and they are now providing security for galamsey operators. If we look at what happened in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and with Boko Haram, we must understand the danger we are facing,” he cautioned.
Dr. Ashigbey called for decisive action to dismantle the criminal networks sustaining illegal mining, stressing that the country cannot afford to let political interests and external influences jeopardise its security and environment.
