The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a key component of President John Mahama’s education vision, which aims to introduce the compulsory study of a foreign language from Senior High School (SHS) Form 2 as part of a broader curriculum review.
Speaking at the free sanitary pad programme launch in Accra on Thursday, April 24, Mr Iddrisu said the initiative is designed to equip Ghanaian students with global competencies and multilingual proficiency to better prepare them for opportunities in the international arena.
"It is also the vision of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that from Senior High School 2, every Ghanaian student will have an option to choose between one major foreign language," the Minister announced.
Languages on offer will include French, Spanish, German, and Chinese, among others, with one language becoming a compulsory addition to each student’s area of study.
According to him, this policy is expected to be integrated into the national curriculum during the next phase of educational reforms.
"French, Spanish, German, Chinese or any other – one compulsory language to accompany your area of study. That will also be introduced as part of our review of curricula," Mr Iddrisu added.
