The Ghana Police Service has initiated a formal investigation into an alleged assault involving the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
This was during the recent protest organised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other allied political parties.
According to an official statement from the Police, the Service has reviewed several video recordings from the demonstration, which captured an incident involving a police officer and the lawmaker.
Following the preliminary review, the Police have written to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to request the release of Hon. Afenyo-Markin to assist with ongoing investigations into the alleged assault.
The statement also indicated that the police officer at the centre of the incident will be cooperating fully with the investigation.
The protest, which took place in Accra, was in response to what the NPP described as a politically motivated suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
While the event was largely peaceful, tensions flared between demonstrators and security personnel at several points during the march.
The Police Service has not disclosed the full details of the altercation or the identity of the officer involved, but emphasised that it is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
