A group of former volunteers at Radio Univers, the University of Ghana’s campus radio station, is preparing to honour Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed, the station’s long-serving manager, with a grand farewell event on Friday, June 6, 2025.
The celebration, aptly named “The Touchdown,” will be held at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana from 6:00 pm and is an invitation-only affair. It will gather former and current colleagues, mentees, dignitaries, friends, and family, all coming together to pay tribute to a leader who has profoundly influenced Ghana’s media landscape.
Known affectionately as Alhaji, Dr. Sidick Ahmed has dedicated over twenty years to Radio Univers, beginning as a student reporter before rising to the position of Station Manager.
Throughout his tenure, he has been instrumental in nurturing young talent and establishing Radio Univers as a vital training ground for aspiring broadcasters.
Albert Quashigah, Chairperson of the Central Planning Committee for the event, shared his thoughts ahead of the celebration.
“When people, despite the odds, dedicate themselves to influencing their communities as did Alhaji, we, those he directly impacted, have to recognise him, while it is still possible,” he said.
He added, “We, volunteers old and new, do not believe in deferring this. We either do it now or we lose the opportunity. Under his embracing arms, we learnt, built our confidence.” Mr Quashigah further expressed his gratitude to the planning team and reflected on the event’s significance: “It is an honour to be part of this planning and to be the Central Planning Committee Chair. This single act of recognition would encourage others to shine in their respective little or big corners. My sincerest gratitude to the 16-member planning committee that worked tirelessly to make this day possible.”
