The 29th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games was officially launched on Friday, 30th May 2025, at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
The launch ceremony also marked the inauguration of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), chaired by the former Pro Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Victor Antwi.
The LOC has been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the seamless planning and successful execution of the 2026 GUSA Games. In his address, Prof. Antwi urged the LOC members and all stakeholders to dedicate themselves to the cause to make the 29th GUSA Games the most impactful.
The 2026 Games will bring together student-athletes from sixteen public universities across Ghana to compete in a wide range of sporting disciplines, including Athletics, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Volleyball, Handball, Tennis, Goalball, among others.
The competition is expected to serve, not only, as a platform to celebrate sporting talent but also to foster unity and camaraderie among the participating institutions.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, conveyed the University’s honor at being selected to host the upcoming Games.
He reaffirmed UEW’s full commitment to delivering a highly successful event and emphasized the transformative potential of university sports in cultivating values such as discipline, dedication, and teamwork.
He further highlighted the University’s intention to upgrade existing sports infrastructure in order to set new standards for university-level sports competitions in Ghana.
In his address, the President of GUSA, Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, expressed deep appreciation to UEW for accepting the responsibility to host the 2026 Games.
He lauded the University's investment in sports development and its efforts to create an environment that nurtures future national sports icons. Mr. Tanko called on all stakeholders to devote themselves to organizing a truly inspirational sporting event.
“Together, let us make these Games a remarkable celebration of sportsmanship and a testament to what we can achieve when we unite with purpose and passion,” he remarked.
The launch ceremony was attended by several distinguished personalities including Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, UEW, Prof. Victor Antwi former Pro Vice-Chancellor, UEW, Prof. Jonathan Ammah, Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports, Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Dean, Faculty of Health, Allied Sciences and Home Economics Education,Prof. Mrs. Rebecca Akpanglo-Nartey, Principal of UEW College of Languages, and Dr. Mrs. Edinam Avoke, Dean of Students.
The rest are Dr. Theophilus Mensah, Director of Sports, UEW, Mr. Bawa Fuseini, Director, National Sports College, Winneba, Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, President of GUSA, Dr. Timothy K. Mensah, Organizing Secretary of GUSA, Mrs. Emma Pimpong, Public Relations Officer, GUSA, Mr. Collins Awuku Manager, Radio Windy Bay, Mr. Nurudeen Ahmed, UEW Head Coach, members of the media, and key staff of the University.
The successful launch signals the beginning of extensive preparations toward hosting what is expected to be an exceptional and historic sporting event in 2026.
