Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has defended former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta amid growing concerns over his absence from proceedings related to an ongoing investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, 16 June, Mr Mohammed dismissed claims that Mr Ofori-Atta is evading justice, stating that the former minister is unwell and has not deliberately ignored any legal summons.
“Ken Ofori-Atta is not running away from accountability; he is simply unwell,” Mr Mohammed explained.
He urged the public to be measured in their comments and allow due process to unfold, stressing that Mr Ofori-Atta has a strong track record of public service and would not shirk his legal responsibilities without cause.
His comments come after the Office of the Special Prosecutor officially declared Mr Ofori-Atta wanted for failing to respond to invitations in connection with a probe into suspected procurement irregularities during his tenure.
The OSP's action has sparked public debate and led to criticism from opposition figures and sections of civil society.
However, Haruna Mohammed cautioned against politicising the situation. “We must not rush to conclusions or politicise a matter when someone is genuinely unwell,” he said. “
The law must take its course, but it must do so with fairness and compassion.”
He further called on the Special Prosecutor to exercise discretion and ensure that justice is pursued without compromising the dignity or rights of individuals under investigation.
