The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) will commemorate this year’s Olympic Day on Saturday, 21st June, in collaboration with various sports federations and the Ghana Education Service. The event will feature a series of activities aimed at promoting Olympic values and encouraging participation in sports.
The celebration will include sports competitions, fitness sessions, and educational programmes designed to engage people of all ages and backgrounds. These activities aim not only to promote physical activity but also to highlight the relevance of Olympic values in everyday life.
Over 1,000 students from approximately 20 schools are expected to converge at the Accra Sports Stadium for a fun-filled day of sporting and educational activities. In addition to promoting Olympic ideals, students and attendees will have the opportunity to witness demonstrations from 21 sporting disciplines, offering a unique chance to explore different sports and uncover potential talent.
Selected schools will also participate in a quiz competition designed to test their knowledge of the Olympic Movement, its history, and its values. The competition seeks to educate and engage young people in the spirit of Olympism.
GOC President Mr Richard Akpokavie stated, “Olympic Day falls on June 23, but Ghana will celebrate on June 21. The GOC aims to inspire Ghanaians to embrace the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect, while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle through sports.”
“After a long break, arrangements for this year’s event promise an exciting and engaging experience for all participants,” added Mr Fedrick Lartey-Otoo, chairman of the planning committee.
Olympic Day is a global celebration that marks the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and promotes the core values of excellence, friendship, and respect that define the Olympic Movement.
