Ghana international Lawrence Agyekum says he “never really considered” a move to the Belgian league but he couldn’t turn it down when the opportunity fell to him.
Agyekum joined Cercle Brugge on an initial loan spell last season from Red Bull Salzburg before eventually sealing a permanent move.
The 21-year-old had been playing in Austria following his transfer from WAFA but couldn’t break into the Salzburg first team leading to his move to Belgium.
“I really never considered moving to Belgium but you never know what can happen in the next six months…you can find yourself in any country or any league,” he said in an exclusive interview with Joy Sports.
“For me when I heard there was an opportunity to move to Belgium, I knew it would be a good opportunity, a good exposure to showcase my talent and help in my development.”
He added that clubs in Austria showed interest in signing him before eventually settling on Cercle Brugge.
“There were clubs in even Austria [who tried to sign me] but I chose Belgium because there is much exposure there than Austria,” he continued.
Agyekum enjoyed a good first season in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League helping the team beat relegation and earning a maiden Ghana call-up.
