The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage has announced a series of events to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the passing of the late former President, Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills.
At a press briefing in Accra, the Heritage outlined a three-day programme designed to honour the life, leadership, and legacy of the former President, who died in office on 24 July 2012.
The commemorative activities will begin on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, with a public lecture focusing on President Mills' values and leadership style. The lecture is expected to feature prominent speakers and thought leaders reflecting on his commitment to peace, democracy, and national development.
On Thursday, 24 July 2025, the exact date of his passing, a memorial service will be held at Asomdwee Park, his final resting place near Independence Square in Accra. The solemn ceremony will bring together family members, former colleagues, government officials, and members of the public to remember and celebrate his life.
The events will conclude on Saturday, 26 July 2025, with a hockey tournament in Accra, a nod to President Mills’ lifelong passion for sports, particularly hockey. The late President was an avid sportsman and an active promoter of youth development through sport.
Since its establishment in 2021, the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage has consistently organised annual lectures, sports tournaments, and memorial events to preserve and promote the ideals of the late President.
Organisers have extended an open invitation to the public to participate in the upcoming events, describing the 13th anniversary as a chance to reflect on “the principles of humility, peace, and public service that defined President Mills’ leadership.”
