The Ghana Para Athletics Association, in collaboration with the National Paralympic Committee (NPC-Ghana), has successfully kick-started its National Talent Identification Program with a vibrant event at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
This long-awaited initiative aims to scout and develop new athletic talent across the country to feed into Ghana’s para athletics team for upcoming national and international competitions.
The Zone 1 event brought together over 29 persons with impairments or disabilities from Kumasi and nearby towns including Offinso, Konongo, Beposo, Asante Mampong, and KNUST.
Participants, aged between 15 and 43, were introduced to a range of para athletics disciplines including wheelchair racing, 100m and 200m sprints, javelin, shot put, and discus.
The coaching team featured Coach Suleman Aminu, former national athlete Patrick Yaw Obeng, and national athlete and Paralympian Zinabu Issah. By the end of the day, 15 determined and talented athletes had been selected for further training and development.
Beyond talent scouting, the exercise also contributed to building a more accurate national database for para athletics participants.
The Ghana Para Athletics Association extended appreciation to the National Lotteries Authority for their support, and acknowledged contributions from NPC President Samson Deen, Foster Kwarteng, Dr. Isaac Donkor, Dr. Abena Tannor, Ignatius Elletey, Imoro Abdul Basit, and other key stakeholders.
The next event is expected to be organized in the Central Region on Saturday, 19th July 2025 at the Cape Coast Stadium.
