Guatemala has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative, describing it as “the only serious, credible and realistic basis” for a lasting resolution to the Moroccan Sahara dispute.
Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, made the statement during a press briefing in Rabat following a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Martinez Alvarado emphasised that the proposal fully respects Morocco’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
He also reiterated Guatemala’s backing for a political, realistic, pragmatic and mutually acceptable solution to the regional conflict.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Guatemala was the first Latin American country to open a Consulate General in Dakhla, a move made in December 2022, underscoring its support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue.
