Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, has called on young people in her constituency to take the lead in shaping a sustainable future, inspired by the message of this year’s International Youth Day.
The global event, observed annually on August 12, was celebrated under the theme “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond.” In Ghana, the commemoration took on the theme “Ghana’s Youth: Lighting the Way to Our Sustainable Future,” with the National Youth Authority urging young change-makers across the country to develop innovative solutions to national challenges.
Speaking in an interview, Ms. Akurugu said the national call should not remain an abstract message but must find practical expression at the grassroots level.
“It is important that this theme comes alive in our homes, our schools, and our communities. For me, that starts here in Dome-Kwabenya,” she said.
She highlighted the unique potential of young people in her constituency, describing them as a “powerhouse of creativity, resilience, and determination” capable of turning local challenges into opportunities.
“Our youth are not short of talent or ideas, what they need is the encouragement, mentorship, and platforms to make their visions a reality,” she added.
Ms. Akurugu urged Dome-Kwabenya’s youth to channel their energy into entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship, technology, and social innovation.
She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting youth-led initiatives through skills training, networking opportunities, and partnerships that align with the Sustainable Development Goals.
“This is our time to rise,” she said with conviction. “If our young people take the lead, not only will Dome-Kwabenya shine, but Ghana as a whole will take a bold step toward the future, we all want.”
