President John Mahama has directed that the abandoned Adenta–Dodowa road project be revived under his government’s Big Push Agenda.
Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, disclosed that the directive means the project will be prioritised, with the necessary steps taken to ensure the contractor returns to the site.
"President Mahama directed that that should be incorporated as part of the Big Push Agenda," he said on JoyFM's Super Morning Show on Thursday, September 4, when discussing the state of deplorable roads in the country.
"If we left it like that, it would become a disaster, so we will prioritise it because people need it," he added.
Mr Agbodza disclosed that the government has engaged the same contractor to commence work.
"The contractor is beginning to mobilise to the site. The good thing is that we have asked the same contractor to start looking from Dodowa through Afienya to Dawhenya to connect back to the Tema-Aflao road so that we can have a very good connection there."
The Big Push Agenda seeks to fast-track the completion of key road infrastructure across the country within 24 months.
The Adenta–Dodowa stretch, which links the Adenta municipality to the Eastern and Volta regions, has been left in a deplorable state, generating heavy dust, pollution, frequent traffic congestion, and daily discomfort for commuters.
The project began on 25th March 2024, and being undertaken by Oswal Investment Limited, an indigenous Ghanaian firm.
It is a 22-kilometre road project that was originally scheduled for completion within 36 months. At present, however, the contractor has abandoned the site due to unpaid contract sums.
